As part of a series on leadership, we asked the executives of Toyota Material Handling what advice they have for aspiring leaders in the material handling industry. This week, we feature TMH General Counsel Lea Ann King.

Advice to 25-year-old self: “As I have progressed in my career, the one thing I regret the most is not taking more chances. I look back and see the number of times I played it safe and small. I didn’t raise my hand for stretch assignments or positions.”

“The advice I give to folks, regardless of age and stage in your career, is to realize that we often learn the most – and the most about ourselves as leaders – when we fail.”

Leadership Thoughts: “Everyone is a leader regardless of title, role, or place in the organization. In fact, I think those that have no direct authority over others have the greatest opportunity to lead.”

“Being a leader means influencing others to follow you and inspiring them with your vision. If you can do that across a company with those that you have no authority over, you will be a natural leader when the promotions do come.”

“To stay passionate about your work, you have to embrace a growth mindset and become a lifelong learner. It keeps us fresh and on top of our game.”

Quote to Note: “Nurture relationships and be someone who brings positive energy every day. Energy is contagious.”
